More than just the time

Complication watches at the Musée international d'horlogerie

Alarm clock, calendar, self-winding mechanism, chime, chronograph, world time displays, tourbillon : There are many functions which enrich the hour, minute and second displays on the watches we wear today and add to our fascination for them. Since when have timepieces been equipped with what kinds of complications ? Why were they developed ? What technical aspects make each one special ?

In this richly illustrated volume, everyday experiences intertwine with the history of the measurement of time. The treasures presented here all come from the famous collections at the Musée international d‘horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, but the pieces that have been newly acquired in the last few years have been pushed to the fore.

Monika Leonhardt a étudié l'histoire, la littérature et l'histoire de l'art à Constance et à Zurich, Master of Arts (M.A.) 1988. Elle collabore au sein de diverses institutions et musées, dont le Museum für Gestaltung et le Kunsthaus à Zurich. De 2005 à 2015, elle est responsable du Musée de l'horlogerie Beyer à Zurich. Elle collabore en 2015-2016 à la réalisation de l'exposition, " Watch this ! Genfer Uhren in Basel " au Musée historique de Bâle. Aujourd'hui, elle consacre son temps à la réalisation de visites guidées et à la rédaction de textes sur l'art et l'histoire de l'horlogerie.

Mitarbeit in verschiedenen Institutionen und Museen, unter anderem im Museum für Gestaltung, Zürich, und im Kunsthaus Zürich. Von 2005 bis 2015 Leiterin des Uhrenmuseums Beyer Zürich. 2015/16 Projektmitarbeit an der Ausstellung " Watch this ! Genfer Uhren in Basel " im Historischen Museum Basel. Führungen, Texte und Projekte zur Kunst- und Uhrengeschichte.

Monika Leonhardt, Study of History, Literature and Art History in Constance and Zurich, Magister Artium (M.A.) 1988. She has been employed at a range of institutes and museums, including the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and the Kunsthaus Zürich. From 2005 to 2015, she was manager of the Beyer Clock and Watch Museum in Zürich. In 2015-2016, she was a member of the "Watch this ! Geneva time pieces in Basel" project at the Historisches Museum Basel. She is the creator of guides, textsand projects on the history of art and watches.
